Limit order Definition

What Is a Limit Order and How Does It Work?

A limit order is an instruction to buy or sell a financial instrument at a specified price or better — rather than at the current market price. When you place a limit order, your trade will only execute if the market reaches your target price, giving you control over your entry or exit point.

Buy Limit vs. Sell Limit Orders

Order Type Triggers When Trader’s Expectation
Buy Limit Price falls to your set level Price will rise after hitting that level
Sell Limit Price rises to your set level Price will fall after hitting that level

Limit Orders vs. Market Orders

A market order fills immediately at the best available current price. A limit order waits until your preferred price is reached — or does not fill at all. Limit orders are preferred when price precision matters more than immediate execution, such as when entering at a support level or exiting at a resistance target.

Practical Example: Using a Limit Order

Suppose EUR/USD is currently trading at 1.0850 and you believe price will pull back to 1.0800 before moving higher. You place a buy limit order at 1.0800. If price reaches that level, your order fills. If price never retraces, the order remains pending and no position is opened — protecting you from chasing the market.

Advantages of Using Limit Orders

  • Price control: you define exactly where you enter or exit

  • Discipline: removes the impulse to chase price

  • Automation: orders execute without you needing to watch the screen

  • Slippage reduction: especially in range-bound or liquid markets

Limit Orders: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, a limit order is not a fill — it is a pending instruction. If the market does not reach your price, no trade is executed. In fast-moving markets, price can gap past your limit level without triggering a fill, particularly around major news events. Always review pending orders after high-impact releases.
