Market order Definition

What Is a Market Order

A market order is the most basic order type, involving the buying or selling of a financial asset at the current market price, with immediate effect.

Unlike orders that wait for a specific price level, a market order is designed to execute as quickly as possible at the best available price at that moment.

Why Traders Use Market Orders

  • Speed of execution — useful when getting into or out of a position quickly matters more than the exact entry price.

  • Simplicity — no need to set a specific price level in advance.

  • Reacting to news — often used when traders want to act on fast-moving information without delay.

What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, the price at which a market order is filled can differ slightly from the price last displayed, particularly during periods of low liquidity or high volatility. This difference is commonly known as slippage. Traders who want more control over their entry or exit price may instead consider limit orders.

Order Type Execution Price Certainty
Market order Immediate, at current price Lower
Limit order Only at a specified price or better Higher

When a Market Order Makes Sense

Market orders tend to suit situations were acting without delay matters more than securing an exact price, such as closing a position quickly in a fast-moving market. For traders who want to set a specific price level instead, a limit order is usually the more suitable choice, accepting that it may not always be filled.

Choosing the Right Order for the Moment

Market orders prioritise speed over price certainty. Understanding this trade-off helps traders decide when immediate execution is genuinely needed, and when a different order type might better suit their strategy.

Risk Warning:Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
