Swap rates refer to the exchange of a series of fixed or floating interest rate payments between two parties over a specific duration. In the context of manual trading — particularly in the forex and CFD markets — a swap rate is the overnight interest charge or credit applied to any position that remains open past the daily market close, typically set at 5:00 PM New York time.
The mechanism behind this is rooted in the interbank interest rate differential between the two currencies in a forex pair, or the financing cost of holding a leveraged position in other asset classes. When you hold a trade overnight, you are effectively borrowing one currency to buy another — and the difference in interest rates between those two currencies determines whether you pay or receive a swap.
This means swap rates can work for you or against you depending on the direction of your trade and the interest rate environment at the time.
Understanding the distinction between fixed and floating swap rates is essential for manual traders managing positions across multiple days or weeks:
Fixed swap rates remain constant for the duration of the agreement or position. They offer predictability — you know exactly what the overnight financing cost will be before you enter the trade, making long-term position planning far more straightforward.
Floating swap rates move in line with prevailing benchmark interest rates — such as SOFR (Secured Overnight Financing Rate) or EURIBOR. As central banks raise or lower interest rates, floating swap charges adjust accordingly. In a high-interest-rate environment, floating swap costs can increase significantly, directly eroding the profitability of positions held over extended periods.
For manual traders holding swing or position trades over days or weeks, the distinction between fixed and floating swap exposure is not a technicality — it is a cost management decision.
Swap rates have a direct, quantifiable effect on the outcome of any trade held overnight. Here is where their impact is most acutely felt:
They accumulate silently. Unlike spreads or commissions — which are visible at the point of execution — swap charges accrue daily and can compound over time without the trader consciously registering them. A position held for two weeks in a high-swap pair can carry a meaningful additional cost that was never factored into the original trade plan.
Triple swaps on Wednesdays. In the forex market, positions rolled over on Wednesday night attract three days’ worth of swap charges — covering Saturday and Sunday when the market is closed but interest continues to accrue. Many manual traders are caught off guard by this, particularly those newer to multi-day position holding.
Direction determines whether you pay or receive. In currency pairs where the base currency carries a higher interest rate than the quote currency, a long position may earn a positive swap — effectively being paid to hold the trade overnight. Reversing that position would incur a negative swap. Knowing this before you enter a trade is a meaningful edge.
Check swap rates before holding overnight — always review the swap charge for both long and short directions on your intended instrument before deciding to hold a position past the daily close; most trading platforms display this clearly in the instrument specification or market information panel
Account for swap costs in your risk-reward calculation — if your target profit is 50 pips but the daily swap charge is 8 pips and you plan to hold for 10 days, that 80-pip cumulative cost fundamentally changes your net return; build swap into every multi-day trade calculation
Plan around the Wednesday triple swap — if your trade is approaching the Wednesday rollover and you are not confident in the near-term direction, consider whether holding through the triple charge is justified by the trade thesis; sometimes closing before Wednesday and re-entering Thursday is the more cost-efficient approach
Identify positive carry opportunities — when swap rates align with your directional bias — meaning you are paid to hold the position rather than charged — it creates a carry trade dynamic that adds an additional return stream on top of any price movement in your favour
