A dragonfly doji is a candlestick pattern with a long lower shadow and little or no upper shadow, where the open, close and high are near the same level.
It forms when sellers push the price down during the session but buyers recover the lost ground by the close, hinting at a possible reversal higher.
In simple terms, a dragonfly doji shows sellers were beaten back by buyers before the close.
During the session, the price falls sharply, creating the long lower shadow. Before the period ends, buyers step in and lift the price back near where it opened, leaving little or no body and no meaningful upper shadow. When this appears after a downtrend, it can suggest that selling pressure is easing and that a move upward may be developing, though it needs confirmation.
What traders look for
A clear prior downtrend for the reversal to work against
A long lower shadow with little or no upper shadow
A close near the session high
A confirming bullish candle afterwards
| Feature | Dragonfly doji | Gravestone doji |
|---|---|---|
| Long shadow | Lower | Upper |
| Appears after | A downtrend | An uptrend |
| Suggests | Possible move up | Possible move down |
The dragonfly and gravestone doji are mirror images. A dragonfly has a long lower wick and forms when price falls during the session but recovers to close near the open, often appearing near the bottom of a move. A gravestone has a long upper wick and forms when price rises then falls back, often near a top. Both show a rejection of one direction, but the side carrying the wick points to which way sentiment may be shifting. As with other single-candle patterns, its reliability improves when it appears near a clear level or on rising volume, and many traders wait for the following session before drawing firm conclusions.
A dragonfly doji is a caution rather than a certain signal, and it is more reliable at established support levels and on higher timeframes. In quiet markets it can appear without much meaning, and false signals do occur. Most traders confirm the pattern with the following candle and with other tools before acting on it.
Picture a downtrend where a session drops sharply, then buyers return and push the close back near the open, leaving a long lower wick and little body. That dragonfly doji hints selling pressure may be fading. Traders usually look to the next candle to confirm before treating it as a turning point.
The dragonfly doji is a useful early hint that a downtrend may be losing strength as buyers regain control late in the session. Reading it alongside the wider trend and confirmation helps traders judge potential reversals, while managing the risk of any position carefully given that patterns can fail.
