A doji is a candlestick pattern in which the opening and closing prices are almost equal, forming a very small or non-existent body.
The result is a candle shaped like a cross or plus sign, which reflects a balance between buyers and sellers during that period.
In simple terms, a doji shows that a market opened and closed at nearly the same price.
A doji represents indecision. Neither buyers nor sellers managed to gain the upper hand by the close, even if the price moved during the session. On its own, a doji is neutral, but its meaning strengthens depending on where it appears. After a strong trend, a doji can hint that momentum is fading and that a reversal or pause may follow, though confirmation is needed.
Common types of doji
Standard doji, with small upper and lower shadows
Long-legged doji, with long shadows on both sides
Dragonfly doji, with a long lower shadow
Gravestone doji, with a long upper shadow
| Feature | Doji | Trend candle |
|---|---|---|
| Body size | Very small | Large |
| Message | Indecision | Clear control by one side |
| Open and close | Nearly equal | Far apart |
A doji means little on its own, but its location gives it context. After an extended uptrend or downtrend, it can suggest the prevailing move is losing steam and a pause or reversal may follow. In the middle of a choppy, range-bound market, doji candles appear often and carry little weight. Traders therefore read a doji alongside the surrounding trend, nearby support or resistance, and volume, rather than treating every one as meaningful. The pattern also carries more weight when it lines up with other evidence, such as a key support or resistance level or a shift in volume, than when it appears in isolation during quiet trading.
A doji is a clue rather than a signal on its own. It is most useful in the context of the surrounding trend, key levels and volume, and traders usually wait for the next candle to confirm any change of direction. In a quiet or ranging market, doji candles appear often and carry little meaning, so context is essential.
Say a market has climbed for several days, then prints a doji, with the open and close almost identical and the candle shaped like a cross. Buyers and sellers finished in balance. After a strong run up, that hesitation can hint momentum is fading, so a cautious trader waits for the next candle before acting.
The doji is one of the most recognisable candlestick patterns because it captures a moment of balance in the market. Learning to read it in context helps traders spot possible turning points, while keeping in mind that a doji signals uncertainty and that any resulting trade still carries risk.
