A daily chart is a price chart on which each candlestick or bar represents one full trading day of activity.
It records the open, high, low and close for every session, letting traders study how a market has behaved over weeks, months or even years.
In simple terms, a daily chart sums up a whole day of trading in a single price bar.
Every candle on a daily chart captures four data points for the session: the opening price, the highest and lowest prices reached, and the closing price. On most platforms the daily close is set to the broker’s server time, so the exact cut-off can differ slightly between providers. Because each bar holds an entire day of information, the resulting patterns tend to be clearer and less distorted by short-lived intraday movements.
The daily chart is one of the most widely followed timeframes in forex, indices and share trading. Swing traders and position traders use it to identify the broader trend, mark key support and resistance levels, and plan entries that may last several days or weeks. Signals on a daily chart are often seen as steadier than the same signals on a one-minute or five-minute chart, though no timeframe removes uncertainty from the market.
| Feature | Daily chart | Intraday chart |
|---|---|---|
| Bar covers | One trading day | Minutes or hours |
| Best suited to | Swing and position trading | Day trading and scalping |
| Noise level | Lower | Higher |
| Signals per week | Fewer | Many |
Traders often pair the daily chart with a higher timeframe, such as the weekly, to confirm the overall direction, then drop to a lower timeframe to fine-tune entries. Moving averages and the relative strength index are frequently applied to daily data because the smoother price action produces steadier readings. It is worth noting that some markets leave gaps over weekends, which can change how a pattern looks when trading resumes.
Many traders read the daily chart alongside other timeframes rather than in isolation. The daily view sets the broader trend, an hourly or four-hour chart helps fine-tune entries and exits within it, and the weekly chart shows whether a move fits the longer-term backdrop. Combining timeframes can give a fuller picture than any single one, though it does not remove uncertainty, and signals still need confirming before a trader acts on them.
Suppose a swing trader checks the daily chart each evening. Price has just closed above a level that capped it for weeks, on a strong candle. Rather than reacting to intraday swings, they treat that daily close as a clearer read of the trend and plan their next steps around it.
The daily chart gives traders a balanced view of a market, filtering out much of the short-term noise while still updating often enough to stay practical. Understanding how each bar forms and how the timeframe fits into wider analysis helps traders build a clearer picture before committing to a position, while keeping the ever-present risks of trading firmly in mind.
