Multiple-timeframe analysis Definition

What Is Multiple-Timeframe Analysis?

Multiple-timeframe analysis is an assessment of a product’s price movement across different time frames, such as weekly, daily, hourly, and 15-minute charts.

Rather than relying on a single chart view, traders look at the same instrument across several timeframes to build a more complete picture of price behaviour.

Why Traders Use More Than One Timeframe

  • Context from higher timeframes — a weekly or daily chart can reveal the broader trend that a shorter chart alone might not show.

  • Timing from lower timeframes — hourly or shorter charts are often used to refine entry and exit points within that broader context.

  • Spotting conflicting signals — comparing timeframes can highlight when short-term moves run counter to the longer-term trend.

A Common Approach

Many traders use a structure of three timeframes: one for overall trend direction, one for general trade planning, and one for precise entry timing. The exact timeframes chosen typically depend on individual trading style, from longer-term position trading to short-term intraday trading.

A Simple Example

A trader might check a weekly chart and see a broad upward trend, then check a daily chart to confirm that price has recently pulled back within that trend, then switch to an hourly chart to look for a specific entry point as price shows signs of resuming the move. Each timeframe answers a different question in the same decision.

Zooming Out Before Zooming In

Multiple-timeframe analysis adds context that a single chart cannot provide on its own. As a reminder, it does not remove uncertainty from a trade decision, but it can help ensure that shorter-term decisions are made with awareness of the bigger picture.

Risk Warning:Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
