Rupee extends rally as RBI curbs oil dollar demand; USD/INR slips below 95 ahead of US CPI

The rupee extended gains against the US dollar for a third session after the RBI introduced steps aimed at dampening dollar demand. In early trade, USD/INR fell 0.35% to just under 95.00, the lowest in over a month. Measures include a special window for PSU oil marketing companies to buy dollars for crude imports and tighter hedging rules, which redirect part of oil-related demand away from the spot market and may affect forward demand through higher hedging costs. External factors continue to frame the move: the MCX crude contract expiring 19 October rose nearly 0.5% to around Rs. 9,000, recovering from a monthly low of Rs. 8,338, while Middle East tensions persisted after an attack caused a limited fire at a Saudi Aramco building in Dhahran.

The dollar softened ahead of US CPI data due at 12:30 GMT, with DXY down 0.1% near 102.10 after a 102.61 peak on Monday. Markets are pricing US headline inflation at 3.6% YoY versus 3.4%, and core CPI at 2.5% versus 2.4%, alongside ongoing attention on the Fed. In India, wholesale inflation accelerated to 11.39% YoY from 9.92%. Technically, USD/INR traded at 94.95, below the 20-day EMA of 95.92, with RSI (14) near 34; support sits around 94.30.

Strategy and Positioning for Derivative Traders

We recommend that derivative traders treat the current USD/INR decline below the 95.00 handle as a temporary pullback rather than a permanent trend reversal. While recent central bank interventions have eased immediate pressure, structural demand for dollars to fund energy imports will likely limit sustained rupee gains. Traders can look to deploy call option spreads on dips to position for a recovery toward the 20-day exponential moving average near 95.92.

We anticipate that rebounding crude oil prices will continue to weigh on the rupee, given that energy imports historically make up over a quarter of India’s total merchandise import bill. With domestic crude futures pushing back toward Rs 9,000 per barrel amid geopolitical friction, currency weakness remains a persistent underlying threat. Using long futures or upside call options can help traders offset the market fallout from higher energy-driven dollar demand.

Managing Volatility and Technical Levels

We also suggest preparing for heightened volatility across currency derivatives as US inflation metrics collide with rising domestic price pressures. India’s wholesale inflation surging to 11.39% underscores broader macroeconomic headwinds that could force further interest rate policy shifts. Non-directional options strategies like straddles may prove effective for capturing sharp price swings caused by these inflation releases.

On the technical front, we are monitoring the 94.30 support level as a crucial zone for defining risk over the coming weeks. Entering defined-risk positions near this floor allows traders to participate in an expected rebound while limiting drawdowns from unexpected central bank action. Maintaining disciplined stop-loss orders remains essential to manage exposure during volatile trading sessions.
