The Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar on Thursday after the prior day’s holiday, with USD/INR rebounding to about 95.50 from Tuesday’s 10-day low of 95.40. A dip in oil prices had pointed to a firmer open, but the dollar’s recovery on Wednesday followed July US Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) data that kept inflation concerns in focus. The Dollar Index (DXY) was holding near 99.15. Core PCE was 3.3% year-on-year, matching estimates and the previous reading, while headline PCE held at 3.7% versus an expected 3.6%. CME FedWatch showed odds of rates being left unchanged in September at 64%.

Markets were also watching remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday, 28 August. Separately, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed a revenue-sharing agreement with Oman linked to the Strait of Hormuz, which carries almost one-fifth of global energy supply, though it said reopening would take more than the deal. MCX September 21 crude was down 1.5% at roughly Rs. 7,775. Technically, USD/INR was near the 20-period EMA at 95.5543, with resistance at 95.55 then 96.5178, and support at 95.40 then 94.16; RSI (14) sat within 40.00–60.00. Warsh became Fed chair in May 2026, his term runs to 2030, and his Board term ends in May 2040; he was born 13 April 1970 and served as a governor from 2006 to 2011.

Technical Consolidation and Derivative Strategies

We are seeing the USD/INR pair consolidate tightly around the 95.50 level as market participants digest sticky US inflation data. With the 20-period exponential moving average resting at 95.55 and the Relative Strength Index hovering in neutral territory, the technicals point to a classic volatility contraction. Derivative traders should avoid heavy directional exposure today and prepare for a potential breakout.

The upcoming Jackson Hole address by Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh on August 28 is the primary catalyst we need to watch. Since the CME FedWatch tool currently shows a 64% probability of steady rates in September, any hawkish surprise could rapidly push USD/INR past the immediate 95.55 resistance. To hedge against this event risk, we suggest using long straddles or strangle options to capture sudden, sharp moves in either direction.

Fundamental Drivers and Trading Triggers

On the fundamental side, the revenue-sharing agreement between Iran and Oman near the Strait of Hormuz has pulled crude prices lower, which directly benefits the oil-dependent Indian economy. Historically, India imports over 85% of its crude oil requirements, meaning a sustained drop in energy costs will support the Rupee. We can exploit this by setting up bear call spreads if USD/INR fails to break above 96.52.

For short-term traders, the immediate support level at 95.40 serves as a crucial line in the sand. If this support holds after the Jackson Hole symposium, we expect the range-bound theme to continue, making iron condors an attractive choice. However, a decisive breach of 95.40 could open the doors toward 94.16, prompting us to shift quickly to put options.
