EUR/USD retreats as US dollar rebounds after CPI, energy and Middle East risks buoy demand

EUR/USD slipped on Wednesday, surrendering earlier gains as the US Dollar recovered after an in-line US CPI release. The pair was trading around 1.1521 after reaching an intraday high of 1.1563. Headline and core CPI cooled to 3.4% and 2.5%, respectively, which initially pressured the Greenback and prompted a paring back of Fed rate-hike pricing. Later, the Dollar clawed back losses as higher energy prices kept inflation risks skewed to the upside, while limited prospects for peace in the Middle East and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz supported safe-haven demand. DXY hovered near the 100 level after rebounding from 99.61.

The move left EUR/USD near the lower end of its recent range after repeated failures at the 100-day SMA. On the daily chart, the pair held above 1.1500 and the 50-day SMA at 1.1466. RSI was near 56, MACD stayed positive with a fading green histogram, and ADX in the high 20s pointed to moderate trend strength. Resistance sits at the 100-day SMA at 1.1567, with the 200-day SMA near 1.1630 beyond; support is 1.1500, then 1.1466.

Derivative Strategy Outlook

We see fading bullish momentum in the EUR/USD pair, which suggests derivative traders should brace for a potential shift in direction. With the pair recently failing to break past the 100-day Simple Moving Average at 1.1567, we recommend focusing on short-term range-bound strategies. Selling out-of-the-money call options near the 1.1630 resistance level could generate steady premium income while this consolidation lasts.

If the pair breaks below the immediate psychological support of 1.1500, we expect a rapid decline toward the 50-day SMA at 1.1466. In this scenario, buying near-term put options or executing bear put spreads will allow traders to capitalize on a downward break. Recent CFTC Commitment of Traders data supports this cautious outlook, showing that institutional net-long positions in the Euro have started to pull back by nearly 8% from their recent peaks.

Macro Environment and Trading Guidance

Geopolitical tensions and sticky energy prices continue to bolster the US Dollar as a safe-haven asset, keeping the US Dollar Index steady near the 100 mark. This aligns with historical August trading patterns, where lower summer liquidity often amplifies range-bound behavior before major autumn trends emerge. We advise keeping position sizes conservative and using tight stop-losses, as any sudden shifts in global inflation data could quickly spike volatility.
