AUD/USD steadies near 0.7020 as weak Australian PMI contrasts with rising RBA hike bets

AUD/USD traded around 0.7020 in early European hours on Friday after modest losses, with the Australian Dollar steady following preliminary S&P Global PMI figures. The S&P Global Composite PMI fell to 47.7 in October from 51.3 in September, the lowest since March and the first contraction in private-sector activity since May. Manufacturing PMI edged up to 49.7 from 49.6, yet it marked a second consecutive month below 50, while Services PMI slid to 47.8 from 51.9, its weakest since March and its first contraction since May despite new business remaining in expansion at a slower pace.

Rate expectations in Australia firmed after comments from an RBA monetary policy board member, with the Guardian reporting the implied probability of a November hike rising to 45% from 30%. Such a move would be the fifth increase this year, taking the OCR target from 4.6% to 4.85%, the highest since the global financial crisis. AUD/USD upside was tempered as the US Dollar regained some traction, with the US 10-year Treasury yield near 4.98% after dropping more than 10 basis points to a one-month low, while markets also pared back Federal Reserve hike expectations amid a sell-off in technology and artificial intelligence shares.

Derivative Trading Strategies and Volatility Outlook

We suggest derivative traders prepare for increased volatility in AUD/USD options as market odds for a November RBA rate hike jump from 30% to 45%. With Australia’s Composite PMI contracting to 47.7, a policy tightening to 4.85% could trigger sharp, unpredictable price swings. Traders can look at straddle strategies or short-term call options to capture potential upside if inflation fears overpower slowing economic growth.

Risk Management Amid Shifting Global Sentiment

We also recommend hedging against downside risks as US 10-year Treasury yields bounce back toward the key 4.98% level. Historically, when benchmark US yields hover near 5.00%, the US dollar attracts strong capital inflows that cap gains for risk-sensitive currencies like the Aussie dollar. Utilizing put options or short futures positions can help shield derivative portfolios against a breakdown below the psychological 0.7000 level.

Finally, we advise keeping a close eye on global risk sentiment as tech stock selloffs continue to reshape Federal Reserve expectations. Past market cycles show that combined manufacturing contractions and equity volatility often drive money into safe-haven assets rather than high-beta currencies. Managing position sizes with strict stop-loss parameters will ensure traders remain agile through the upcoming central bank policy updates.
