Position Definition

What Is a Position?

A position is the direction of a trade made: long means betting on a price increase, while short means betting on a price decrease. Holding a position means you currently have exposure to a market, with your eventual profit or loss depending on how price moves relative to the direction taken.

Long Positions Explained

A long position is opened when a trader expects the price of an asset to rise. Profit is realised if price moves higher than the entry level, while a loss occurs if price falls instead, making a long position the more intuitive of the two directions for most new traders to understand.

Short Positions Explained

A short position is opened when a trader expects the price of an asset to fall. In CFD trading, this typically involves selling first without owning the underlying asset, with profit realised if price subsequently falls, and loss occurring if price rises against the position instead.

Open vs Closed Positions

An open position remains active and continues to reflect ongoing market movement until it’s closed, at which point any profit or loss becomes realised. Reviewing all open positions together gives a trader a clear picture of total current exposure across their account at any given moment.

Every Position Carries Risk in Both Directions: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, both long and short positions carry the potential for loss, and a position moving against you can do so quickly, particularly when leverage is involved. Knowing your exit plan, including a stop-loss level, before opening any position helps manage that risk from the outset.

Understanding Direction Before You Trade

A position is the simplest expression of a trading decision: a bet on which direction price will move next. Being clear on whether you’re long or short, and why, is one of the most basic but essential habits to build before placing any trade.

⚠ Risk Warning: CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
