Mini lot Definition

What Is a Mini Lot

A mini lot is a lot size in forex trading equal to 10,000 units of the base currency, sitting between a micro lot (1,000 units) and a standard lot (100,000 units).

Trading one mini lot of GBP/USD, for example, means controlling 10,000 pounds’ worth of exposure in that pair.

Why Traders Choose Mini Lots

  • Balanced exposure — larger than a micro lot, but with a smaller capital requirement than a standard lot.

  • Flexible risk sizing — allows traders to scale position size more closely to their account balance.

  • Common among retail traders — widely offered across brokers as a practical middle-ground lot size.

How Lot Size Affects Your Trade

The lot size chosen directly affects how much each pip movement is worth in monetary terms. A larger lot size means each pip carries greater value, which increases both potential gains and potential losses for the same price movement.

A Simple Pip Value Example

For most currency pairs quoted to four decimal places, one pip on a mini lot is typically worth around 1 unit of the quote currency, roughly ten times the pip value of a micro lot and one-tenth that of a standard lot. This makes it easier to estimate the potential impact of price movement before placing a trade.

Matching Lot Size to Your Strategy

Choosing between micro, mini, and standard lots is primarily a position-sizing decision. As a caution, larger lot sizes amplify the impact of price movements in both directions, so lot size should be selected with your account size and risk tolerance in mind.

Risk Warning:Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
