Resistance Definition

What Is Resistance in Trading?

Resistance is a level on a price chart at which selling pressure is expected to outweigh buying pressure, resulting in a potential reversal in price movement. It effectively acts as a ceiling that price struggles to move above, at least until enough buying pressure builds to push through it.

How Resistance Levels Form

Resistance often forms at price points where an asset has previously struggled to advance beyond, as traders who bought near that level in the past may look to sell once price returns to it, reinforcing the ceiling over time. Round numbers and prior swing highs are common areas where resistance tends to cluster.

Common Resistance Calculation Methods

Method Formula/How to Identify
Pivot Points (Floor) PP = (H + L + C) / 3
R1 = (2 × PP) – L
R2 = PP + (H – L)
R3 = H + 2(PP – L)
Previous Highs Look at past price peaks where the market reversed lower
Trendlines Connect lower highs in a downtrend to create a resistance line
Fibonacci Levels R1 = PP + ((H–L) × 0.382)
R2 = PP + ((H–L) × 0.618)
R3 = PP + ((H–L) × 1.000)
Moving Averages In downtrends, MA lines (e.g., 50-day, 200-day) often act as resistance
Round Numbers Psychological levels like 1.2000, 160.00 often become resistance

How Traders Identify Resistance on a Chart

Traders typically draw resistance by connecting previous price highs, and may also look at round numbers, moving averages, or Fibonacci retracement levels, which often coincide with areas where price has paused or reversed before, giving extra weight to a level when several of this line up together.

What Happens When Price Breaks Through Resistance

When price does manage to push through a resistance level convincingly, often on strong volume, that former ceiling can turn into a new support level. This kind of breakout is frequently watched as a potential signal that buying pressure has taken control, though false breakouts that quickly fail are also common and worth watching for.

Resistance Levels Aren’t Fixed: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, resistance is based on past price behaviour and isn’t a hard barrier that price is guaranteed to respect. A level can hold for months and then be broken decisively, so it’s worth treating resistance as a probability rather than a certainty and pairing it with proper risk management.

Reading Resistance as a Guide, not a Guarantee

Resistance is a foundational concept in technical analysis, useful for setting expectations around where price might pause or reverse. Used alongside other tools and proper risk management, it can add real structure to a trading plan.
