Range Definition

What Is a Range in Trading?

The range is the difference between the highest and lowest price of a product over a given time. It’s one of the most basic measures in trading, yet it offers a quick snapshot of how far an asset’s price has swung within that window, making it a useful starting point before digging into more detailed analysis.

How a Trading Range Is Calculated

The calculation itself is simple:

  • Range = Highest Price − Lowest Price

This can be measured over any timeframe, from a single trading session to a week, month, or longer, depending on what a trader wants to understand about price behaviour. Shorter windows tend to highlight intraday volatility, while longer windows reveal broader swings.

What a Wide or Narrow Range Tells You

A wide range generally points to higher volatility, with prices swinging sharply between highs and lows. A narrow range suggests calmer conditions, where prices move within a tighter band. Neither is inherently good or bad, but each suits different trading approaches, and recognising which environment you’re in helps inform you which strategy might be appropriate.

Why Range Matters for Risk Management

Understanding an asset’s typical range helps traders set more realistic stop-loss and take-profit levels, rather than placing them arbitrarily. It also gives a sense of how much capital might be at stake if price moves against a position within that window, which feeds directly into decisions around position sizing.

Range Isn’t the Whole Story: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, a historical range only reflects what’s already happened, not what will happen next. A market that has traded in a tight range for weeks can break out sharply in either direction, so range should be read alongside other tools rather than on its own, particularly around major news events or data releases.

Putting Range into Context

Range is a small but useful piece of the puzzle when assessing volatility. Combined with broader market analysis and sound risk management, it can help shape more informed trading decisions across virtually any market or timeframe.

⚠ Risk Warning: CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
