Range trading Definition

What Is Range Trading?

Range trading is a trading strategy wherein a trader purchases an asset when it reaches the lower limit of its trading range and sells it when it reaches the upper limit. The approach is built around the idea that price will keep bouncing between these two boundaries for as long as the range holds, rather than breaking decisively in either direction.

How the Range Trading Strategy Works

In practice, a range trader identifies a clear floor (support) and ceiling (resistance) that price has repeatedly respected. Positions are then opened near the floor with a view to selling near the ceiling, or vice versa for those trading the range in reverse, with each new touch of a boundary treated as a fresh signal rather than an automatic guarantee of a bounce.

Tools Traders Use to Identify a Range

Support and resistance lines are the foundation of most range-trading setups, often combined with oscillators such as RSI or stochastic indicators to judge whether price is nearing an overbought or oversold extreme within the range. Some traders also use Bollinger Bands to visualise how far price typically strays from its average within the range.

When Range Trading Suits the Market (and When It Doesn’t)

This strategy tends to work best in range-bound or sideways markets, where price genuinely lacks a clear trend. It’s far less reliable in strongly trending conditions, where prices can break through what looked like a firm boundary and keep moving, leaving a range trade on the wrong side of a sustained move.

The Risks of Range Trading: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, ranges don’t last forever, and a breakout beyond the established limits can quickly turn a range trade into a losing one if it isn’t managed with a stop-loss. Relying purely on past boundaries holding is not a guarantee they will continue to do so, especially around scheduled economic announcements.

Is Range Trading Right for Your Style?

Range trading can suit traders who prefer clearly defined entry and exit points, but it depends heavily on correctly identifying a genuine range in the first place, and on managing risk if that range eventually breaks in an unexpected direction.

⚠ Risk Warning: CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
