Failure swing Definition

What Is a Failure Swing?

A failure swing is a technical signal in which the price attempts to break a previous high or low but fails to do so, hinting that the prevailing trend may be losing strength. It is often discussed alongside momentum tools such as the Relative Strength Index (RSI), where the same failure to make a new extreme can point to a weakening move and a potential reversal.

How a Failure Swing Forms

In an uptrend, a top failure swing appears when the price or indicator reaches a high, pulls back, then rallies again but cannot exceed the earlier peak before turning lower. In a downtrend, a bottom failure swing forms when a new low is attempted but the price holds above the previous trough, suggesting selling pressure is fading.

Top and Bottom Failure Swings

Type Trend What Happens
Top failure swing Uptrend A new high is attempted but fails, then price breaks lower
Bottom failure swing Downtrend A new low is attempted but fails, then price breaks higher

Using the Signal

Traders often watch for a failure swing as an early warning that momentum is stalling, particularly when it lines up with support, resistance or a divergence on an oscillator. Confirmation from the following candles or a break of a nearby level is commonly used before acting, rather than relying on the pattern alone.

Reading a Failure Swing With Care

A failure swing signals weakening momentum, not a confirmed reversal, and the original trend can resume after a brief pause. Acting on the pattern without supporting evidence can expose a trader to false signals, especially in choppy conditions. It is best treated as one input among several rather than a standalone trigger.

Placing the Failure Swing in Context

The failure swing is most useful as a prompt to pay closer attention when a trend may be running out of conviction. Combined with trend analysis and momentum tools, it helps traders judge shifts in the balance between buyers and sellers. Across VT Markets instruments, recognising momentum signals like this can sharpen a trader’s sense of timing.
