Long-legged doji Definition

What Is a Long-Legged Doji Candlestick Pattern?

A long-legged doji is a candlestick pattern characterised by a very small real body positioned at or near the centre of the candle, with equally long upper and lower shadows (wicks). The small body shows that the open and close prices were nearly identical, while the extended shadows indicate that price moved significantly in both directions during the period before returning to the opening level.

What the Long-Legged Doji Signals

This pattern is a visual expression of indecision. Bulls pushed price upward during the session, bears pushed it back down — and neither side gained lasting control. The result is a standoff: price closed almost exactly where it opened, despite significant movement in between. This makes the long-legged doji a potential reversal signal, particularly when it appears at a key support or resistance level.

Long-Legged Doji vs. Other Doji Types

Doji Type Body Shadows Signal
Standard Doji Tiny Short, approximately equal Minor indecision
Long-Legged Doji Tiny Very long, approximately equal Strong indecision / potential reversal
Gravestone Doji Tiny, at bottom Long upper, no lower Bearish reversal signal
Dragonfly Doji Tiny, at top Long lower, no upper Bullish reversal signal

How to Trade the Long-Legged Doji

The long-legged doji is rarely a standalone entry signal. Traders typically look for confirmation in the following candle: a strong bullish candle after a long-legged doji at support suggests buyers are taking control; a strong bearish candle after one at resistance suggests sellers are winning. Volume analysis adds further weight — a doji on high volume carries more significance than one on thin market activity.

Long-Legged Doji: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, the long-legged doji is a rare pattern and should not be treated as a reliable signal without context. Its appearance during low-volume periods or mid-range price action carries less significance. Always confirm with a follow-through candle and consider the broader trend direction before acting on this pattern alone.
