Gravestone Doji Definition

What Is a Gravestone Doji?

A gravestone doji is a candlestick pattern that forms when the price rises during a period but then reverses to close back near the opening level. The result is a candle with a long upper shadow and little or no body, showing that early buying was overtaken by selling before the close.

How the Candle Forms

The open, low and close of a gravestone doji sit close together near the bottom of the candle, while the high extends well above them. This shape reflects buyers pushing the price up during the session, followed by sellers driving it back down to where it began.

What the Pattern Suggests

Appearing after an uptrend, a gravestone doji can point to weakening momentum and a possible reversal lower, as the failure to hold higher prices signals hesitation. Its meaning is stronger when it forms near resistance or is confirmed by the following candles.

Related Doji Shapes

Doji Type Long Shadow Typical Context
Gravestone doji Upper After an uptrend, possible reversal lower
Dragonfly doji Lower After a downtrend, possible reversal higher
Long-legged doji Both Indecision with no clear direction

Reading a Gravestone Doji With Care

A single gravestone doji signals indecision rather than a confirmed turn, and the price can continue upward afterwards. Acting on the pattern alone, without confirmation from volume, trend context or later candles, can expose a trader to false signals. It is best treated as one input among several.

Placing the Gravestone Doji in Context

The gravestone doji is most useful as a prompt to pay closer attention when a rally may be losing conviction. Combined with trend analysis and confirmation, it helps traders judge shifts in momentum. Across VT Markets instruments, recognising candlestick patterns like this can sharpen a trader’s sense of timing.
