Fibonacci Definition

What Is Fibonacci in Trading?

Fibonacci refers to a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two preceding ones. In trading, ratios derived from this sequence are used to build Fibonacci retracements, which help identify potential levels of support and resistance. Traders apply these levels to gauge how far a price might pull back before the prevailing trend potentially resumes.

How Fibonacci Retracements Work

A trader draws a Fibonacci retracement by connecting a significant high and low on a chart. The tool then marks horizontal levels at key ratios between them. These levels highlight areas where the price may pause or reverse during a pullback, giving traders reference points for planning entries, exits and stop placement within a trend.

Key Fibonacci Retracement Levels

Level Common Use
23.6% Shallow pullback in a strong trend
38.2% Moderate retracement level
50% Widely watched midpoint (not a true Fibonacci ratio)
61.8% The ‘golden ratio’, a closely followed level
78.6% Deep retracement before trend continuation

Using Fibonacci Alongside Other Tools

Fibonacci levels are most useful when they line up with other evidence, such as trend lines, moving averages or prior price levels. Many traders look for confluence, where several signals point to the same area, before acting. On their own, the levels describe possibilities rather than certainties.

Reading Fibonacci Levels With Care

Fibonacci retracements are drawn using subjective high and low points, so different traders may place them differently and read different levels. Price does not have to respect any given level, and treating a retracement as a precise turning point can be misleading. The tool works best as one part of a broader analysis rather than a standalone signal.

The Role of Fibonacci in Analysis

Fibonacci retracements give traders a structured way to anticipate where pullbacks might find support or resistance within a trend. Understanding that these levels indicate probabilities, not certainties of a turn, keeps expectations grounded. Across VT Markets instruments, combining Fibonacci with other tools can help traders frame their analysis more clearly.
