The buy and sell meanings in trading are straightforward: buying means opening a position expecting a price to rise, while selling means closing that position or opening one expecting a price to fall. Buyers profit when prices go up; sellers profit when prices go down.
In simple terms, the buy and sell meanings come down to direction. If you think a market will climb, you buy (go long). If you think it will drop, you sell (go short). The buying and selling definition covers these two core actions that every trade is built on.
A long position, also called going long or buying, is when you open a trade expecting an asset’s price to rise, so you can sell it later at a higher price for a profit. You enter at the ask price and aim to exit at a higher bid price. Going long is the most common way people trade and invest, and your potential profit rises as the price climbs.
A short position, also called going short, shorting, or selling, is a strategy for profiting when prices fall. You sell an asset first (often borrowed, or through a derivative such as a CFD), then aim to buy it back later at a lower price, keeping the difference. Shorting is the opposite of going long: it lets traders profit from falling markets, not just rising ones.
| Aspect | Long (Buying) | Short (Selling) |
|---|---|---|
| Expectation | The price will rise | The price will fall |
| Entry | Buy at the ask price | Sell at the bid price |
| Exit | Sell higher | Buy back lower |
| Profit when | The market goes up | The market goes down |
| Loss when | The market goes down | The market goes up |
Every market quotes two prices. The ask (or offer) is the price you buy at, the lowest price a seller will accept. The bid is the price you sell at, the highest price a buyer will pay. The gap between them is the bid-ask spread, which acts as a transaction cost. Understanding bid and ask matters because you buy at the ask and sell at the bid, so the price must move enough to cover the spread before you profit.
Prices are set by the balance between buyers and sellers. When buyers are more aggressive than sellers, demand outweighs supply and prices rise. When sellers dominate, supply outweighs demand and prices fall. This constant tug-of-war between buying and selling pressure is what moves every market, from stocks and forex to commodities and indices.
To better understand how buying (long) and selling (short) work in practice, let’s look at some real-world trading examples that illustrate both profit and loss scenarios.
You buy a forex pair because you expect its exchange rate to rise.
Profit scenario: You buy EUR/USD at 1.1000 and sell at 1.1100, gaining 100 pips.
Loss scenario: You buy EUR/USD at 1.1000 and sell at 1.0950, resulting in a 50-pip loss.
You sell a stock that you don’t own because you expect its price to fall.
Profit scenario: You short-sell Tesla (TSLA) shares at $300 and buy them back at $250, making a $50 profit per share.
Loss scenario: You short-sell Tesla (TSLA) shares at $300 and buy them back at $350, resulting in a $50 loss per share.
These examples show that traders can potentially profit from both rising and falling markets. However, losses can occur when the market moves against their expectations, making risk management an essential part of trading.
