Behind every major shift in global trade, there is a currency story — and right now, one of the most important belongs to the RMB.
RMB stands for Renminbi — the official currency of the People’s Republic of China. The term translates from Mandarin as “the people’s currency,” reflecting its origins following the founding of modern China in 1949. The primary unit of the Renminbi is the yuan, which is why both terms — RMB and Chinese yuan — are used interchangeably across financial markets.
In forex markets, the Chinese yuan is quoted as CNY for the onshore version traded within mainland China, and CNH for the offshore version traded freely in international markets — most notably in Hong Kong.
Understanding the dual structure of the RMB is essential for any forex trader with exposure to Chinese currency markets.
The CNY trades within mainland China under strict capital controls, managed closely by the People’s Bank of China (PBoC). The PBoC sets a daily midpoint fixing rate and allows the CNY to move within a defined band — limiting its free-float and maintaining direct government control over the exchange rate.
The CNH is the freely traded offshore yuan available to international investors and forex traders outside mainland China. Not subject to the same capital controls as the CNY, the CNH can diverge from the onshore rate — and it is this version that most international forex traders access when positioning on the Chinese yuan.
China is the world’s second-largest economy and largest trading nation by volume. The RMB underpins an enormous share of global trade flows — and shifts in Chinese economic data, trade policy, or central bank guidance can move the yuan and trigger ripple effects across commodity currencies, emerging market pairs, and broader risk sentiment.
The IMF added the Renminbi to its Special Drawing Rights (SDR) basket in 2016 — formally recognising it alongside the US dollar, euro, Japanese yen, and British pound as a major global reserve currency. This has accelerated the RMB’s integration into international portfolios and central bank reserves worldwide.
During periods of US-China trade tension, movements in USD/CNH are closely watched as a real-time barometer of geopolitical and trade risk. A weaker yuan often signals escalating tensions; a strengthening yuan reflects improving confidence.

The RMB is no longer a peripheral currency — it is a central player in global forex markets whose movements carry significance far beyond China’s borders. Traders who understand the Renminbi’s structure, policy drivers, and market role are better positioned to navigate the increasingly China-influenced landscape of modern finance
