A pip is the smallest unit of measurement for a currency pair’s price movement. Short for ‘percentage in point,’ it’s the standard way traders measure how far a currency pair has moved, regardless of which pair is being traded.
For most currency pairs, a pip refers to a movement in the fourth decimal place, so a move from 1.2700 to 1.2701 in GBP/USD represents one pip. Pairs involving the Japanese yen are the main exception, where a pip typically refers to the second decimal place instead, due to the way the currency is conventionally quoted.
Because pips offer a consistent way to measure price movement, they’re used to calculate profit and loss on a forex position alongside the lot size traded. A larger position size means each pip of movement carries greater monetary value, which is why pip value and position size are always considered together.
Outside forex, other markets use their own equivalent unit, often referred to as a point, to measure price movement. An index CFD, for example, typically measures movement in points rather than pips, though the underlying concept of tracking incremental price change remains the same.
As a precaution, the monetary value of a single pip can vary depending on the currency pair traded and your account’s base currency, so the same pip movement doesn’t always translate to the same profit or loss across different positions. Checking pip value before sizing a trade helps avoid misjudging your actual exposure.
Pips give traders a simple, standardised way to talk about and measure price movement across the forex market. Understanding how they’re calculated, and how they translate into actual profit or loss, is one of the earliest and most useful skills to build as a forex trader.
⚠ Risk Warning:CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
Trading Contracts for Difference (CFDs) carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. The use of leverage can significantly magnify gains and losses and may result in losses exceeding your initial investment. Prior to engaging in CFD trading, you should ensure that you fully understand the risks involved, carefully consider your investment objectives, financial situation, and level of experience, and seek independent advice where necessary. Past performance is not indicative of future results. Please refer to our legal documents for a comprehensive overview of the risks associated with CFD trading.
