A pipette is a fractional pip used to quote currency pairs with greater precision. Rather than rounding to the standard fourth decimal place used for a pip, a pipette adds a fifth decimal place, representing one-tenth of a standard pip.
For a pair such as GBP/USD, a price of 1.27005 reflects half a pip more than 1.27000, a level of detail that wouldn’t be visible if the price were only quoted to four decimal places. This extra digit allows brokers to display tighter, more precise pricing, particularly useful in highly liquid major currency pairs.
Currency pairs involving the Japanese yen are typically quoted to two decimal places rather than four, so a pipette in these pairs appears as a third decimal place instead. The underlying principle stays the same: a pipette always represents one-tenth of whatever a standard pip is for that particular pair.
Not every broker or platform displays pricing down to the pipette level, and some traders never need to think about it directly since most calculations are still typically discussed in whole pips. Brokers offering pipette-level pricing generally do so to provide tighter spreads and more granular price transparency to clients.
As a precaution, while a single pipette represents a very small price movement, it still contributes to the overall spread and execution price on a trade, particularly for larger position sizes. Overlooking pipette-level pricing when comparing brokers or spreads can lead to underestimating small but cumulative trading costs.
Pipettes exist to add an extra layer of pricing precision on top of the standard pip, particularly useful in fast-moving, highly liquid markets. Understanding how they work helps make sense of the extra decimal place you may see quoted on certain trading platforms.
