Most people understand one way to make money in financial markets: buy low, sell high. But there is a second, equally powerful approach that works in reverse — and it thrives precisely when markets are falling. That approach is short selling.
Short selling is the act of selling a security with the intention to repurchase it at a lower price later. The short seller profits from the difference between the higher price at which they sold and the lower price at which they subsequently bought back — turning falling markets from a threat into an opportunity.
Where traditional investors profit only when prices rise, short sellers are uniquely positioned to generate returns in bear markets, during corrections, and in response to company-specific negative events.
In traditional equity markets, short selling involves borrowing shares from a broker, selling them at the current market price, and repurchasing them later at a lower price to return to the lender. The profit is the difference between the sale price and the repurchase price, minus borrowing costs and fees.
For manual traders using CFDs (Contracts for Difference), short selling is far more accessible. Opening a short CFD position allows you to profit directly from a falling price without the complexity of borrowing shares — making it the most widely used method among retail traders on platforms like VT Markets.
Short selling removes the constraint of needing rising prices to generate returns. In volatile or declining markets, short sellers can actively capitalise rather than waiting on the sidelines for conditions to improve.
Short selling is a powerful hedging tool. Traders with long exposure to an asset or sector can open short positions to offset potential losses if the market moves against them — protecting portfolio value during periods of elevated risk.
Earnings misses, regulatory actions, management failures, and deteriorating macro data all create short selling opportunities. Manual traders who identify these catalysts early can position accordingly before the broader market reprices the asset.
Unlimited loss potential — When buying, your maximum loss is capped at your investment. When short selling, there is theoretically no ceiling on how high a price can rise — meaning losses can exceed your initial position significantly
Short squeezes — If a heavily shorted asset rises sharply, short sellers rushing to close simultaneously can accelerate the upward move — amplifying losses rapidly for those caught on the wrong side
Timing sensitivity — A justified short position can still move against you for extended periods before the anticipated decline materialises; disciplined stop loss management is essential throughout
Risk Warning: Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
Trading Contracts for Difference (CFDs) carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. The use of leverage can significantly magnify gains and losses and may result in losses exceeding your initial investment. Prior to engaging in CFD trading, you should ensure that you fully understand the risks involved, carefully consider your investment objectives, financial situation, and level of experience, and seek independent advice where necessary. Past performance is not indicative of future results. Please refer to our legal documents for a comprehensive overview of the risks associated with CFD trading.
