Quasi money refers to assets that can be easily converted into cash but are not considered legal tender, such as money market funds or time deposits. These instruments aren’t used directly to settle everyday transactions, but they can be turned into spendable cash quickly and with relatively little loss of value.
Typical examples include savings accounts, time deposits, certificates of deposit, and money market fund holdings. Each offers a degree of liquidity above longer-term investments like property or equities, while still falling short of physical cash or demand deposits in terms of how instantly they can be accessed.
Economists and central banks track quasi money as part of broader money supply measures, often labelled M2 or M3 depending on the country, because it reflects how much near-cash liquidity exists in an economy. Shifts in these measures can offer early context on consumer spending capacity and broader monetary conditions.
Economists often distinguish between narrow money, such as physical cash and demand deposits, and broader measures that include quasi money alongside it. As you move from narrow to broad money supply definitions, more quasi money instruments are added in, reflecting a wider but slightly less liquid pool of funds circulating within the economy at any given time.
As a precaution, while quasi money is described as easily converted into cash, some instruments carry withdrawal notice periods, early redemption penalties, or short delays before funds become available. Treating all quasi money as equivalent to cash on demand can lead to liquidity surprises when funds are actually needed, particularly during periods of broader market stress when redemption terms can tighten further.
Quasi money sits in the space between hard cash and longer-term investments, offering a useful middle ground for both individuals and economies managing their liquidity needs. Understanding where it fits, and how quickly it can genuinely be accessed, helps build a clearer picture of overall liquidity and monetary conditions across markets.
