What Is a Margin Call

A margin call is a request from a brokerage informing a trader that they need to add funds to their account to meet the minimum margin requirement for their open positions.

It is typically triggered when losses on open trades cause the account’s equity to fall below a set threshold relative to the margin being used.

Why Margin Calls Happen

Margin calls are a built-in safeguard. As the market moves against an open position, the equity in the account decreases. Once that equity drops to a level the broker has defined, a margin call is triggered to alert the trader before the situation worsens further.

Common Ways Traders Respond

  • Adding funds — depositing additional money to restore the required margin level.

  • Closing or reducing positions — exiting some or all open trades to free up margin.

  • Reviewing position sizing — reassessing how much exposure was taken relative to account size.

Margin Call vs Stop-Out

A margin call is generally a warning, not an automatic action. It gives a trader the opportunity to respond before the account reaches a more critical level.

If equity continues to fall and no action is taken, many brokers apply a separate, automatic stop-out level, at which open positions may begin to be closed without further notice, in line with the broker’s specific policy.

Why Margin Levels Are Worth Monitoring Regularly

Margin calls are typically triggered by a combination of position size, leverage used, and how far the market has moved against open trades. Reviewing margin level alongside open positions on a regular basis, rather than only after a notification appears, gives traders more time to make considered decisions.

Why Margin Calls Are Worth Understanding Early

A margin call is a signal, not a punishment. As a precaution, traders who understand how margin calls are triggered are generally better placed to monitor their account proactively, rather than reacting only once a call has already been issued. If positions remain unaddressed, accounts can also be subject to automatic stop-outs under a broker’s policy.

Risk Warning:Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
