Lot-based commission Definition

What Is a Lot-Based Commission in Trading?

A lot-based commission is a fee charged by a broker for facilitating a trade, calculated according to the number of lots traded rather than as a fixed flat rate. Instead of widening the spread to recover costs, brokers using this model charge a transparent per-lot fee on each trade — typically applied at open and again at close.

How Lot-Based Commission Is Calculated

The commission is applied per lot, per side. A broker might charge USD 3.50 per lot per side, meaning a round-turn trade (open + close) on one standard lot costs USD 7.00 in commission. Larger lot sizes increase the commission proportionally.

Lot Size Commission per Side Total Round-Turn Cost
1 Standard Lot (100,000 units) USD 3.50 USD 7.00
0.5 Lots (50,000 units) USD 1.75 USD 3.50
0.1 Lots / 1 Mini Lot (10,000 units) USD 0.35 USD 0.70

Lot-Based Commission vs. Spread-Only Pricing

Feature Lot-Based Commission Spread-Only Pricing
How broker earns Per-lot fee on each trade Mark-up embedded in spread
Transparency High — cost is explicit Lower — cost hidden in spread
Spreads offered Typically raw or near-raw Typically wider
Better for High-frequency or larger volume traders Infrequent traders

Who Benefits from a Lot-Based Commission Model?

Active traders who place many transactions per day often prefer lot-based commission accounts because the tight raw spreads reduce total trading costs at scale. A scalper executing dozens of trades daily may pay significantly less in total costs under a per-lot commission structure than under a spread-only model where each pip of markup compounds across high volume.

Lot-Based Commission: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, lot-based commissions add a fixed cost to every trade you open and close — regardless of how the trade performs. For lower-frequency traders or those trading very small lot sizes, a spread-only account may result in lower overall costs. Always calculate your expected commission cost as part of your break-even analysis before choosing an account type.
