A Kondratieff wave — also known as a K-wave or supercycle — is a long-term economic cycle lasting approximately 50 to 60 years, first identified by Soviet economist Nikolai Kondratieff in the 1920s. Kondratieff observed that capitalist economies exhibit recurring patterns of expansion and contraction driven by waves of technological innovation, capital investment, and structural economic change.
| Phase | Season Analogy | Economic Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Expansion | Spring | Rising output, new technology adoption, investment growth |
| Plateau | Summer | Peak prosperity, high employment, beginning of inflation |
| Stagnation | Autumn | Slowdown, debt accumulation, financial speculation |
| Depression | Winter | Contraction, debt destruction, structural reform |
| Wave | Approximate Period | Driving Technology |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Wave | 1780s–1840s | Steam power, early industrialisation |
| 2nd Wave | 1840s–1890s | Railways, steel production |
| 3rd Wave | 1890s–1940s | Electricity, chemicals, heavy industry |
| 4th Wave | 1940s–1980s | Petrochemicals, automobiles, mass production |
| 5th Wave | 1980s–present | Information technology, digitalisation |
Macro analysts and long-term investors use K-wave theory to contextualise the current phase of the economic cycle and anticipate structural shifts in sector leadership. For example, analysts who positioned themselves around the transition from the 4th to 5th wave correctly anticipated the dominance of technology over heavy industry from the 1980s onward. Some now debate whether a 6th wave centred on clean energy and artificial intelligence is beginning.
The Kondratieff wave is a framework for thinking about economic history, not a precise forecasting tool. Cycle lengths vary significantly between waves, making exact timing predictions unreliable. The theory has also been criticised for being difficult to falsify — its broad sweep allows almost any economic event to be fitted retrospectively into a phase. Investors who rely solely on K-wave positioning without accounting for monetary policy, geopolitics, or near-term market dynamics risk misaligning their timeframes considerably.
Kondratieff wave analysis is best understood as one lens among many for examining the structural drivers of economic change. Used alongside shorter-cycle tools and current macro data, it can help analysts ask better questions about which sectors, asset classes, and economies are likely to lead or lag in the decades ahead.
