Fungibility is the ease with which one asset can be swapped for another of the same kind without losing value, such as trading one $10 note for ten $1 notes. A fungible asset is made up of interchangeable units, each identical in value to the next. This quality is central to how money and many financial instruments function, because it allows units to be exchanged freely.
An asset is fungible when its individual units are interchangeable and hold the same value. Currency is the classic example, since one unit is equivalent to any other. Many financial assets, such as shares of the same class or units of a commodity, are also fungible, which makes them straightforward to trade and settle.
| Aspect | Fungible Assets | Non-Fungible Assets |
|---|---|---|
| Units | Identical and interchangeable | Unique and distinct |
| Examples | Currency, shares, commodities | Property, artwork, collectibles |
| Ease of exchange | High | Lower, each valued individually |
Not every asset is fully fungible, and assuming interchangeability where it does not exist can cause confusion, particularly with unique or restricted holdings. Some assets that appear fungible may carry conditions that affect their value or transfer. Understanding whether an asset is genuinely interchangeable is important when assessing how easily it can be traded.
Fungibility underpins the smooth functioning of money and markets by allowing identical units to be exchanged without dispute over value. Recognising the difference between fungible and non-fungible assets helps traders understand how easily something can be bought, sold or settled. Across the markets, this concept supports a clearer view of how assets trade.
