A dividend is a payment a company makes to its shareholders, usually drawn from its profits.
It is one of the ways companies return value to the people who own their shares, alongside any change in the share price itself.
In simple terms, a dividend is a share of a company’s profits paid to shareholders.
When a company earns a profit, its board can choose to reinvest it, keep it in reserve, or distribute part of it to shareholders as a dividend. Dividends are often paid quarterly or annually and are usually a set amount per share. A company is not obliged to pay a dividend, and it can raise, cut or suspend payments depending on its performance and plans.
Key dividend dates
| Date | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Declaration date | The company announces the dividend |
| Ex-dividend date | Buy before this to receive the payment |
| Record date | Shareholders on the register qualify |
| Payment date | The dividend is paid out |
Dividends can provide a stream of income in addition to potential gains from a rising share price. Some investors focus on companies with a steady record of payments for this reason. Reinvesting dividends to buy more shares can also compound returns over time, although the value of shares and the level of dividends can both fall as well as rise.
Shareholders can generally use dividends in two ways. Some take them as a regular income stream, which appeals to investors seeking cash flow. Others reinvest them by buying more shares, which can compound returns over time as future dividends are earned on a larger holding. Many brokers and funds offer automatic reinvestment. Which approach suits depends on an investor’s goals, and in both cases dividends rely on the company continuing to pay them. Companies with a long, steady record of payments are often favoured by income-focused investors, though even they can adjust dividends when circumstances demand it.
A high dividend is not always a sign of strength, as it can reflect a falling share price or a payout the company may struggle to maintain. Dividends also depend on continued profitability, so they can be reduced during difficult periods. Traders should look at the wider health of a business rather than the dividend alone.
Consider a company that pays a quarterly dividend of $0.20 per share. A holder of 500 shares would receive $100 each quarter, alongside any change in the share price. These payments are not fixed, though, and can be reduced if profits fall, so investors watch how sustainable a payout looks.
Dividends are a key way companies reward shareholders and a feature many long-term investors value. Understanding how they work, when they are paid and what they signal helps traders assess shares more completely, while remembering that dividends are never assured and that share investing carries risk.
