Depth of market, often shown as the DOM, is a real-time list of the buy and sell orders waiting at different price levels for an asset.
It reveals how much demand and supply sits above and below the current price, giving a view of short-term liquidity.
In simple terms, depth of market shows the queue of orders around the current price.
The DOM, sometimes called the order book, displays bids on one side and offers on the other. Each level shows a price and the quantity of orders resting there. Large clusters of orders can act as short-term support or resistance, while thin areas may allow the price to move quickly. Because orders can be added or cancelled instantly, the picture changes moment to moment.
What traders look for
Price levels with unusually large resting orders
Imbalances between the buy and sell sides
Thin zones where price could move rapidly
How quickly orders appear or disappear
| Feature | Bid side | Ask side |
|---|---|---|
| Represents | Buy orders | Sell orders |
| Sits | Below current price | Above current price |
| Large size may act as | Support | Resistance |
The depth of market lists the buy and sell orders waiting at different prices, giving a sense of where interest is building. It can highlight areas of potential support or resistance and show how thick or thin liquidity is. What it cannot do is confirm those orders will remain, since participants can pull or add to them instantly, and some large players deliberately keep orders hidden. It is therefore best read as one input among several. Fast-moving or thinly traded markets can see the visible orders change dramatically in seconds, so the DOM is most useful as a live gauge of sentiment rather than a fixed map of future prices.
Depth of market is most valuable to short-term and active traders who watch order flow closely. It has limits, however, because some large participants hide their true size or place orders they intend to cancel. As a result, the DOM should be read as one clue among several rather than a reliable forecast, and it can shift faster than a trader can react.
Picture a trader watching the DOM and seeing large buy orders stacked just below the current price. That might hint at short-term support. But because those orders can be cancelled or added at any moment, the depth of market shows current intentions rather than a firm guide to where price will go.
Depth of market gives traders a window into the immediate balance of supply and demand that a simple price chart does not show. Used carefully, it can support short-term decisions, though its fast-changing nature and the presence of hidden orders mean it should be treated with caution alongside the usual risks of active trading.
