Delta is a measure of how sensitive an option’s price is to changes in the price of the underlying asset.
It is one of the option Greeks and estimates how much an option’s value is expected to move for every one-unit move in the underlying.
In simple terms, delta tells you how much an option’s price may change when the asset moves.
Delta is expressed as a number, usually between minus one and one. A call option with a delta of 0.5 is expected to gain about 0.50 in value for every 1 rise in the underlying asset. Call options carry positive delta because they gain as the asset rises, while put options carry negative delta because they gain as the asset falls. Delta is not fixed and shifts as conditions change.
Call delta compared with put delta
| Feature | Call option | Put option |
|---|---|---|
| Delta range | 0 to 1 | -1 to 0 |
| Rises when asset | Increases | Decreases |
| At-the-money delta | Around 0.5 | Around -0.5 |
Delta helps options traders estimate how a position may respond to price moves and to gauge overall exposure. It is also used as a rough guide to the probability that an option finishes in-the-money. Traders managing several options may add up the deltas of their positions to understand their combined directional risk, a practice known as delta hedging.
Delta constantly changes as the underlying price, time to expiry and volatility shift, so it is a snapshot rather than a fixed value. The rate at which delta itself changes is measured by another Greek called gamma. Traders use delta alongside the other Greeks to build a fuller understanding of how an options position may behave under different conditions.
Delta is not static. It moves as the underlying price changes, as expiry approaches and as volatility shifts. An option deep in the money behaves more like the underlying asset and has a delta near one, while a far out-of-the-money option has a delta close to zero. Because of this, traders often monitor delta across a whole position to gauge their overall exposure, rather than relying on the figure quoted at a single moment. Traders managing several options often track the combined delta of the whole book, since offsetting positions can leave the net exposure quite different from any single contract.
Say an option has a delta of 0.5. If the underlying asset rises by one dollar, the option’s price would be expected to move about fifty cents, all else equal. As the underlying moves, delta itself shifts, so traders watch it continually rather than treating it as a fixed figure.
Delta is one of the most widely used measures in options trading because it links an option’s movement directly to the underlying asset. Understanding it helps traders judge exposure and manage positions more precisely, while remembering that options are complex instruments that carry significant risk.
