Dark cloud cover is a two-candle candlestick pattern that signals a possible reversal from an uptrend to a downtrend.
It forms when a strong bullish candle is followed by a bearish candle that opens higher but then closes well into the body of the first candle.
In simple terms, dark cloud cover warns that buyers may be losing control after a rally.
The first candle is a long bullish (up) candle that fits the existing uptrend. The second candle opens above the previous close, often on a gap, which initially looks positive. Sellers then step in and push the price down so that the candle closes below the midpoint of the first candle’s body. This shift from strong buying to firm selling within two sessions is what gives the pattern its bearish meaning.
What traders look for
A clear prior uptrend for the reversal to work against
A second candle that closes below the halfway point of the first body
Higher trading volume on the bearish candle, adding weight to the signal
Confirmation from the next candle before acting
| Feature | Dark cloud cover | Piercing pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Appears after | An uptrend | A downtrend |
| Signal | Bearish reversal | Bullish reversal |
| Second candle | Bearish, closes into body | Bullish, closes into body |
Dark cloud cover is a warning rather than a certainty. The deeper the second candle closes into the first body, the stronger the signal is generally considered, but false signals are common in choppy or ranging markets. Many traders wait for the following candle to confirm the move and combine the pattern with support levels or momentum indicators rather than relying on it alone.
Dark cloud cover tends to carry more weight when it appears after a clear uptrend and on higher trading volume, which points to genuine selling interest rather than a brief pause. Its signal is generally stronger near a known resistance level, where sellers are more likely to step in. On its own, though, the pattern is only a clue, so many traders combine it with the wider trend and other tools before drawing conclusions. Even then, a confirming candle in the next session adds weight before a trade is placed.
Say a share has rallied for a week and closes strongly. The next day it opens higher, but sellers take over and push the close below the midpoint of the previous candle. A trader might read this as momentum turning, while waiting for the following session to confirm before acting.
Dark cloud cover is a useful early clue that upward momentum may be fading, and it appears across forex, indices and share charts. Because a single pattern can be misleading, traders typically treat it as one input among several and manage the risk of any position carefully, recognising that reversals do not always follow the pattern as expected.
