A closed position is a trade that has been fully exited and is no longer active in the market. Once a position is closed, the trader no longer has exposure to price movements in that particular asset.
In simple terms, a closed position means that a trader has completed a trade by taking the opposite action to the original transaction.
For example:
A trader who bought an asset closes the position by selling it.
A trader who sold an asset short closes the position by buying it back.
When a position is closed, any profit or loss becomes realised and is reflected in the trader’s account balance.
Every trade consists of an opening transaction and a closing transaction.
When traders enter the market, they create an open position. To exit that trade, they must execute an opposite order that closes the position.
Examples include:
Buy EUR/USD → Sell EUR/USD to close.
Buy shares → Sell shares to close.
Sell USD/JPY short → Buy USD/JPY to close.
Positions may be closed manually by the trader or automatically through trading tools such as stop-loss and take-profit orders.
Once closed, the position no longer requires margin and is removed from the list of active trades.
Understanding the difference between open and closed positions is fundamental for traders.
| Open Position | Closed Position |
|---|---|
| Trade is active | Trade is completed |
| Subject to market fluctuations | No further market exposure |
| Profit or loss is unrealised | Profit or loss is realised |
| Requires margin | Margin is released after closing |
An open position remains vulnerable to market movements, while a closed position locks in the trading outcome.
Traders close positions for various reasons depending on their strategy and market outlook.
Common reasons include:
Taking profit: Securing gains after the market reaches a target price.
Limiting losses: Exiting a trade that moves against expectations.
Reducing risk exposure: Avoiding uncertainty during major market events.
Freeing up capital: Releasing funds for other trading opportunities.
Many successful traders establish exit plans before entering a trade, using predefined profit targets and risk limits.
Suppose a trader buys shares at $50 per share.
A few weeks later, the price rises to $60 per share.
The trader decides to sell the shares and close the position.
In this example:
The buy order created the open position.
The sell order created the closed position.
The £10 gain per share becomes realised profit.
If the price had fallen instead and the trader had sold at a lower price, the closed position would have resulted in a realised loss.
Closed positions mark the completion of a trade and determine the actual outcome of a trading decision. By managing when and how positions are closed, traders can better control risk, secure profits, and improve overall trading discipline.
✅ In short: a closed position is a trade that has been exited and is no longer active. Once closed, any profit or loss becomes realised, and the trader no longer has exposure to that market.
