Balance in trading refers to the total amount of money in a trading account, excluding any open positions.
It represents the initial deposit plus any profits or losses from closed trades, as well as deposits, withdrawals, and fees.
In simple terms, balance is the confirmed amount of money in your trading account after all completed transactions.
Unlike other trading metrics, balance does not change in real time when trades are still open.
Your trading account balance changes only when specific events occur.
Deposits or withdrawals
Closed trade profits or losses
Fees, commissions, or swaps
However, if you have open trades:
Your balance remains unchanged
Only when trades are closed will profit or loss be added to the balance
This makes balance a static figure, meaning it does not reflect real-time market movements.
Balance and equity are closely related but represent different values.
Balance: Balance shows your account funds after all closed trades.
Equity: Equity shows your real-time account value, including open trades.
In simple terms, balance is fixed, while equity changes as the market moves.
If you have no open positions, both values will be the same.
Balance plays a central role in managing a trading account.
Capital management
Balance determines how much capital you have available to trade.
Risk control
Traders often calculate risk as a percentage of their balance.
Performance tracking
Balance reflects realised profit and overall account growth.
Margin calculation
Balance acts as the base for determining margin and leverage usage.
Understanding balance helps traders avoid overtrading and maintain proper risk management.
Suppose a trader deposits $1,000 into a trading account.
After closing a profitable trade of $200:
If a later trade is closed with a loss of $100:
If the trader has an open trade showing +$300:
Balance remains $1,100
Equity would reflect the unrealised profit
This example shows that balance only updates when trades are completed.
