USD/CHF Firms as US–Swiss Two-Year Yield Gap Widens, With Franc Carry-Trade Risks in Focus

USD/CHF has turned cautiously firmer since early October 2026, with the macro backdrop increasingly aligned with a recovery over a weeks-to-months horizon. The key support has been a wider US–Swiss front-end yield gap: the two-year differential is about 4.642 percentage points while USD/CHF trades near 0.82848, having rebounded from a year-to-date low around 0.76. Because two-year yields embed expectations for central-bank policy, the move implies markets see US rates staying above Swiss rates for longer. Still, the differential’s information content is limited, given that FX is forward-looking and the spread does not show whether the change is driven by US yields, Swiss yields, or both.

Historical Perspective and Yield Dynamics

History also tempers any simple yield-based case: since 2023 the US has carried a large advantage yet USD/CHF fell for extended periods, reflecting shifting risk premia, hedging demand, growth dynamics and capital flows. Separately, Switzerland’s very low yields raise the question of whether the franc could take some carry-trade funding share from the yen as Japanese yields rise; Swiss two-year yields are about 0.185% versus roughly 1.908% in Japan, a gap near 1.723 percentage points. The Swiss National Bank’s 0% policy rate supports low CHF rates but offers no guaranteed depreciation, and bond yields are not the same as funding costs, especially once hedging is considered. Rising CHF-funded carry could pressure the franc in calm markets, yet unwinds can force rapid CHF repurchases in stress, leaving the outlook conditional on both the yield gap and price action.
