USD/CHF Falls Near 0.8130 as Swiss Deflation Persists and US Rate-Hike Bets Ease

USD/CHF slipped to around 0.8130 in European trading on Thursday, reversing three days of gains as the Swiss franc drew support from domestic price data. Switzerland’s producer and import prices fell 2.1% year on year in July, the same pace as June, extending a deflationary run of more than three years. On the month, the index dipped 0.1% after a 0.3% fall previously, marking a third straight monthly decline as petroleum-related costs eased.

The dollar was also pressured by softer US inflation prints, with headline CPI at 3.4% year on year in July and core CPI at 2.5%, in line with forecasts. Rate expectations shifted: CME FedWatch put the probability of a September rate hike at roughly 36%, down from 48% a day earlier, weighing on USD. Geopolitics could still lend the greenback support, as rising US-Iran tensions raised the prospect of tougher sanctions and even a naval blockade affecting Iranian oil exports.

Swiss Deflation And Policy Outlook

We believe derivative traders should position themselves to exploit the growing monetary policy divergence between Switzerland and the United States over the coming weeks. With Swiss producer and import prices falling by 2.1% year-on-year, domestic deflationary pressures remain firmly entrenched. This continuous drop, which matches historical deflationary stretches from past years, signals that the Swiss National Bank has plenty of room to keep interest rates low or cut them further.

Given that the USD/CHF pair is currently trading down around the 0.8130 level, we see a compelling opportunity to buy USD/CHF call options. Historically, when the Swiss Franc strengthens too rapidly toward these low levels, the central bank has actively intervened or used dovish policy to protect Swiss exporters. We expect this technical floor to hold, making bull call spreads an attractive, low-cost play for traders looking to capture a dollar rebound.

US Dollar Dynamics And Geopolitical Risks

At the same time, we must closely monitor shifting expectations for the Federal Reserve, especially as cooling US inflation has lowered the probability of aggressive rate hikes. While this has temporarily weighed on the greenback, escalating geopolitical risks in the Middle East and threats of oil export blockades could quickly spark safe-haven demand for the US dollar. To hedge against these sudden market shifts, we recommend buying short-term straddles on Swiss Franc pairs to profit from sharp, dual-directional volatility in the near term.
