USD/CHF edges higher as Swiss inflation cools, Dollar steadies and traders eye options upside

USD/CHF ticked higher on Monday after softer Swiss inflation data and a modest recovery in the US Dollar weighed on the Franc. The pair was trading near 0.8109, up 0.38% on the session, as Switzerland’s July CPI remained subdued, with headline inflation at 0.4% year on year versus 0.5% in June, while core CPI held at 0.3% for a fourth month. With policy rates at 0.00%, the backdrop points to limited near-term pressure on the Swiss National Bank to tighten, while the Franc has been the weakest-performing G10 currency so far this quarter.

In the US, the Dollar steadied after last week’s sell-off linked to coordinated intervention by Washington and Tokyo aimed at curbing Yen weakness, while firmer US ISM Manufacturing PMI data offered support. The Dollar Index (DXY) traded around 99.96 after rebounding from 99.42, its lowest since 15 June. Technically, USD/CHF is retesting its 21-day SMA near 0.8110 and remains above the 50-day SMA at 0.8038 and the 100-day SMA at 0.7955; RSI (14) sits near 52.5 and MACD is still negative. Resistance is seen at 0.8200, while support layers include 0.8110, 0.8038, 0.8000 and 0.7955.

Monetary Policy Divergence Drives Derivative Trading Opportunity

We see a compelling setup for USD/CHF derivative traders over the next few weeks due to the stark monetary policy divergence between the US and Switzerland. With Swiss headline inflation dropping to just 0.4% in July, the Swiss National Bank has little incentive to lift interest rates from near-zero levels. Meanwhile, a stronger-than-expected US ISM Manufacturing PMI and a stabilizing US Dollar Index around 99.96 suggest the greenback is finding a solid floor.

Option Strategies And Key Technical Levels

Given this backdrop, we recommend that derivative traders position for a gradual move higher in USD/CHF. Selling out-of-the-money put options with strikes below the key 0.8000 support level allows us to collect steady premium while capitalizing on the Swiss Franc’s weakness as the worst-performing G10 currency this quarter. Alternatively, entering bull call spreads targeting the 0.8200 resistance level offers a defined-risk way to capture the steady upward momentum.

We must monitor the 21-day Simple Moving Average near 0.8110 closely, as a clean daily close above this level will likely trigger a faster move toward 0.8200. Historical price action shows that when the US Dollar Index holds above the major 99.00 support area, USD-centric pairs tend to build reliable bases for multi-week rallies. If USD/CHF breaks below the 50-day moving average at 0.8038, we should adjust our positions and tighten risk parameters to protect against a deeper retracement.
