US midterms loom as tail risks threaten dollar, Treasury yields and gold near key technical levels

US midterms on 3 November put all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats in play, with prediction markets pricing about a 60% chance of a Democratic sweep and roughly 30% for divided government, while a Republican sweep is close to discounted. Because Congress steers taxes, spending and borrowing, and can scrutinise Federal Reserve appointments, the result could reprice the US Dollar, long-dated Treasury yields and gold. A Republican sweep is framed as the largest repricing risk: looser fiscal expectations could lift long-end yields and potentially the dollar, creating headwinds for non-yielding gold, although yields rising on debt-sustainability worries could temper dollar support and underpin gold.

Rates are already in focus. The US average 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose to 7.49%, its highest since November 2023, as Treasury yields climbed on inflation concerns, geopolitical uncertainty and heavy financing needs. On technicals, gold’s key downside markers are $4,000, then the 100-week SMA near $3,850 and $3,800. Resistance is clustered at $4,215–$4,250, then $4,400, $4,460 and $4,500; in a gridlock outcome, the range is framed as $3,850–$4,400. The Relative Strength Index is below 50 and price sits under two weekly moving averages.

Election Scenarios And Market Repricing Risks

With the November 3 midterm elections less than two weeks away, we are preparing for significant repricing across currency, Treasury, and commodity derivatives. Prediction markets are currently pricing in a 60% chance of a Democratic sweep and a 30% chance of a divided Congress, leaving a Republican sweep almost completely unpriced. Because this unpriced outcome carries the largest tail risk, we must remain flexible and avoid holding rigid directional bias until actual results roll in.

If a Republican sweep materializes, we expect a rapid surge in long-term Treasury yields as markets price in increased debt issuance and fiscal stimulus. Historically, sharp jumps in government borrowing expectations have driven 10-year yields higher by 20 to 30 basis points in short windows, creating immediate upward pressure on the US Dollar. For our derivative positions in Gold, this environment would present a major headwind that favors defensive or downside structures.

Gold Levels, Gridlock Implications, And Volatility Strategy

When trading Gold options and futures in the coming weeks, we are focusing on the psychological support level at $4,000. A confirmed break below $4,000 opens the door toward the 100-week moving average near $3,850, where we would look for secondary support. Conversely, if yields drop under a Democratic sweep, we will look for a sustained break above the $4,215 to $4,250 zone before anticipating a rally toward $4,400 and $4,500.

If the election results in a divided government, political gridlock will likely neutralize the immediate fiscal impact on bond yields. In that scenario, we should pivot our focus away from Washington headlines and back to core macroeconomic drivers like Fed rate path expectations and energy market pressures. Recent data shows that 30-year fixed mortgage rates recently reached multi-year highs near 7.5%, proving that broader financial conditions remain sensitive to baseline inflation risks.

To manage the potential for double-digit volatility spikes around election night, we recommend utilizing defined-risk option strategies rather than unhedged directional futures. We should wait for post-election yield curves and exchange rate movements to confirm their direction before aggressively expanding our trade size. By letting price action guide our execution over the coming weeks, we can capitalize on the post-election momentum while mitigating initial whipsaw risks.
