Near-Term Support And Key Data Triggers For The US Dollar
Three banks see the US Dollar supported in the near term by firmer oil prices, elevated US yields and persistent Federal Reserve tightening expectations, yet they do not anticipate either a clean breakout or a sharp reversal without a clear catalyst. The next focal point is US core CPI, with one bank saying a 0.4% month-on-month print or higher would be required to shift market pricing materially. More generally, they characterise the rally as stretched, with positioning extended, implying that follow-through will depend on incoming data rather than momentum alone.
Divergent Bank Views On The Dollar’s Recovery Path
One view is that the central bank is expected to hold rates in October before a fully priced 25 bp hike in December, and that higher energy costs may lift headline inflation while core remains contained, limiting further USD gains. Another argues the Dollar’s recovery rests more on Fed credibility, reinforced by last month’s rate hike, than on forward guidance. A third says its model shows the USD overvalued against all G10 currencies except sterling, and places it at 1.1% overvalued on an equally weighted basis; it nonetheless sees no reversal trigger, while flagging US midterms risk and potential late-October precautionary positioning.
