UK jobs data cool wage pressures, bolstering case for Bank of England rate hold

UK jobs figures point to a softer labour market and cooling pay pressures, lowering the chance that higher energy prices trigger another inflation upswing. Private sector wage growth appears to have bottomed at 2.9%, or 3.3% once compositional effects are removed, a pace that matches the Bank of England’s assessment of what is consistent with its 2% inflation target.

The data suggest the jobs market is much cooler than during the Ukraine shock four years ago, reducing the risk of second-round inflation effects. While a rate rise later this year remains possible if energy prices stay elevated, the central expectation is for policy to stay unchanged, with a 6-3 vote in favour of holding rates this week and interest rates remaining on hold into next year.

Labour Market Trends and Inflation Outlook

We see a clear signal from the latest UK labor data that the pressure on the Bank of England to adjust interest rates is fading. With private-sector wage growth stabilizing around 2.9% to 3.3%, labor dynamics are now firmly aligned with the central bank’s 2% inflation target. This cooling trend, combined with the UK unemployment rate recently ticking up to 4.2%, suggests that the risk of another inflation surge is very low.

Implications for Traders and Market Positioning

For derivative traders, this environment favors positioning for a prolonged interest rate pause rather than preparing for sudden rate hikes. We suggest targeting short-term sterling interest rate (STIR) futures, specifically positioning for SONIA contracts to remain stable as the market prices out near-term policy changes. Unlike the volatile period of 2022 when UK inflation peaked at a historic 11.1%, the current structural stability means traders should expect far less dramatic swings in the bond markets.

We also recommend looking at medium-term UK gilt futures, as stabilizing inflation risks should cap upward pressure on yields. Furthermore, we expect sterling currency options to experience lower volatility in the coming weeks due to this predictable policy path. Traders can capitalize on this by executing range-bound strategies or selling premium on GBP/USD and GBP/EUR contracts.
