Top gold miner slips despite record profit as falling bullion and rising costs squeeze margins

The largest gold miner delivered record third-quarter adjusted net income, yet its shares fell 4.6% on Friday as markets priced forward pressure rather than backward-looking results. Gold slipped below $4,000, while the junior-miner ETF dropped 9.6% over the week versus a 4.1% fall in bullion. Operationally, the focus shifted to margin compression: third-quarter realised pricing averaged $4,317 per ounce against all-in sustaining costs of $1,454, implying about $2,860 per ounce, but fourth-quarter all-in sustaining costs are guided at about $1,900. With gold near $4,000, that points to roughly $2,100 per ounce, with the gold price about 7% lower and the margin about 27% smaller.

Operating leverage amplifies equity moves because costs are sticky. At $3,500 gold and $1,900 costs, margin would be $1,600 per ounce, 44% below the third-quarter level even though gold would be 19% lower. Higher-cost producers feel this more: a drop from $4,317 to $3,500 cuts margin by about 29% at $1,454 costs, but by about 45% at $2,500 costs. Trading action matched the risk-off tone: the junior-miner ETF fell 6.75% on Thursday on about three times Wednesday’s volume, then lost a further 1.83% on Friday to $99.35 on more than twice Wednesday’s volume, after an October rebound that stalled below $116 from a neckline near $117; from $112.92 on 12 October it is down 12%. Energy added strain, with Brent at a six-month high of $116.72, while the University of Michigan showed year-ahead inflation expectations at 4.7% and long-run expectations at 3.5% versus 3.4% in September; the CME FedWatch tool implied about an 84% chance of another rate hike by year-end, lifting gold’s opportunity cost. The USD Index ended flat as gold fell 4.1%, but any renewed dollar strength could compound downside; silver closed below its 2026 lows at $55.01 on Thursday and $53.95 on Friday.

Derivative Trading Opportunities and Tactics

We see a clear opportunity for derivative traders to lean into downside momentum across gold mining derivatives over the coming weeks. Historically, mining stocks trade with a beta of 2.0x to 3.0x relative to spot gold, meaning that any weakness in bullion hits mining equities twice as hard. We should consider buying put options or establishing bear call spreads on mining indices to capture this expanding margin squeeze.

Because junior miners face steeper cost pressures from elevated energy prices, we expect them to underperform underlying bullion even further. A practical strategy involves shorting mining futures or buying put options on junior producers while maintaining a lighter stance on spot gold derivatives. This spread-style posture allows us to profit directly from compressing profit margins, regardless of minor intraday bounces in the physical metal.

Broader Precious Metals Sector Outlook

Silver’s recent breakdown below major support levels signals that precious metals derivatives broadly remain under heavy distribution. Historically, a rising dollar index pressures precious metals in over 70% of trading sessions when the dollar holds above key technical support. We should keep downside targets open on silver options and futures until prices convincingly reclaim lost support on high volume.

Rising oil prices create a double penalty for miners by directly driving up extraction costs while keeping interest rate expectations elevated. High rate expectations raise the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold and silver. We ought to treat short-term bounces in metals as opportunities to enter fresh bearish position swaps or put options rather than signs of a structural recovery.

We should refrain from trying to pick a bottom in the mining sector until specific reversal indicators appear. Sustainable market bottoms in precious metals historically occur only when mining shares consistently outperform bullion on red days for physical gold. Until we observe clear relative strength alongside falling volume on down days, derivative traders should stay focused on short setups and downside hedges.
