TD Securities flags inflation data as key catalyst for gold amid Fed hike pricing, resilient demand

TD Securities said gold and other precious metals have remained firm even as markets price a higher probability of near-term Federal Reserve rate hikes. The firm pointed to shifting reactions after a stronger US jobs report weighed on bullion before less hawkish Fed communication and currency interventions eased pressure, underscoring the market’s sensitivity to fresh data and headlines.

The analysts said the next major catalyst is upcoming US inflation data, which they expect to shape Fed pricing and discretionary flows. An upside inflation surprise could strengthen expectations for tighter policy and weigh on gold, while softer readings could encourage renewed discretionary positioning. Structural factors were cited as continuing support, including a renewed dollar-debasement theme, elevated central bank buying and renewed ETF accumulation, with the implication that a more hawkish Fed stance could delay, rather than derail, the next move higher.

Volatility Strategies For Derivative Traders

We recommend that derivative traders brace for heightened volatility in the gold market as we approach the upcoming U.S. inflation print. Recent market data shows gold holding remarkably resilient, staying highly elevated despite shifting expectations for central bank interest rates. This upcoming consumer price index release will act as the ultimate trigger for gold’s next major directional swing.

If the inflation data surprises to the upside, we expect a temporary sell-off in gold as traders price in a tighter monetary policy. To capitalize on this potential short-term dip, option traders should consider buying short-dated put options or employing bear put spreads. However, we view any such drop as a discount buying opportunity rather than a structural trend reversal.

Positioning For Upside And Structural Support

On the flip side, a cooler-than-expected inflation print will likely spark a massive wave of discretionary buying, pushing gold prices to new highs. We suggest positioning for this bullish breakout by utilizing long call options or bull call spreads to capture the upside with limited risk. This strategy allows us to benefit from the immediate surge in momentum as speculative capital rushes back into precious metals.

Our long-term bullish bias is backed by heavy structural support, including massive global central bank gold purchases which have consistently exceeded 1,000 metric tons annually. Furthermore, gold exchange-traded funds have returned to a pattern of net inflows, indicating a strong floor for the metal. Even if a hawkish surprise delays the rally, these macroeconomic pillars mean the downside remains highly cushioned.
