Sweden’s Producer Prices Quickened in May, Raising Riksbank Rate-Cut Doubts and Supporting Krona

Sweden’s producer price index rose 1.3% month on month in May, up from 1.1% in the prior reading. The move indicates a faster pace of price increases at the producer level over the latest month.

The May outcome extends the previous period’s upward momentum and points to firmer cost pressures across the production pipeline. The month-on-month change, measured at 1.3%, followed the earlier 1.1% rise and sets a higher baseline for near-term pricing trends.

Implications for Inflation, Rates, and the Krona

The rise in Sweden’s producer price index to 1.3% for May shows that inflationary pressures are accelerating at the factory gate. We see this as a warning sign that consumer price inflation, which recently held at 2.3%, may not fall as quickly as the Riksbank hopes. This challenges the market consensus that the central bank will continue its path of steady interest rate cuts through the rest of 2026.

This data suggests we should reposition in interest rate derivatives, as the odds of a rate cut in September have now decreased. The market is pricing in a policy rate near 2.75% by year-end, but we believe futures contracts are now under-pricing the risk of a hawkish pause. Therefore, we are looking at paying fixed on interest rate swaps maturing in late 2026.

For currency traders, this development is bullish for the Swedish Krona. The SEK has been weak, with the EUR/SEK cross rate climbing to over 11.55 this past month, but a more cautious Riksbank could reverse this trend. We see an opportunity in buying EUR/SEK put options, targeting a move back towards the 11.30 level seen earlier in the year.

Equity Market and Volatility Outlook

The outlook for Swedish equities is now more uncertain, which means volatility may increase. The OMXS30 index, which has gained over 10% this year, is sensitive to higher borrowing costs that could result from fewer rate cuts. We recommend buying call options on the OMXV, Sweden’s volatility index, to profit from an expected increase in market turbulence.
