Sterling Steady Near 1.33 as UK Lending Lifts Support Ahead of Fed and BoE Decisions

GBP/USD was little changed around 1.33 in Wednesday’s North American session, with firmer UK lending and money supply releases underpinning the pair. Mortgage approvals beat expectations and lending rose sharply, while Bank of England rate expectations appeared to stabilise, lending some support via yield spreads. UK political developments were limited, though the domestic fiscal discussion continued to shape sentiment towards the government debt market.

Attention turns to near-term event risk, with the 2pm ET FOMC decision followed by the BoE meeting on Thursday. The Monetary Policy Committee is expected to deliver a hawkish hold at 3.75%. On the charts, RSI has steadied in the lower 40s, pointing to modest bearish momentum below the neutral 50 level; since June, the pair has held between support near 1.3150 and resistance around 1.3550, with near-term moves seen in a tighter 1.3250–1.3350 band.

Trading Strategies in a Range-Bound Environment

We suggest derivative traders prepare for tight, range-bound price action as the British Pound consolidates around the 1.3300 level against the US Dollar. Short-term traders should focus on the immediate 1.3250 to 1.3350 boundary, exploiting small fluctuations within this limit. For broader strategies, we recommend respecting the wider established range of 1.3150 and 1.3550.

With the Bank of England expected to deliver a hawkish hold at 3.75%, we anticipate yield spreads will continue supporting the pound. This policy stance is backed by resilient domestic data, including UK mortgage approvals hovering near 60,000, which highlights steady economic activity. Traders can take advantage of this rate stability by selling short-term strangles to collect premium while the currency pair remains anchored.

Fiscal Policy and Technical Considerations

We must monitor the UK government’s fiscal policy closely, especially as debates over welfare reform keep the sovereign debt market sensitive. Historical data shows that UK 10-year Gilt yields, which have fluctuated around 4.10% to 4.30% over the past year, remain highly reactive to spending announcements. If fiscal worries trigger a sudden sell-off in gilts, we should be ready to buy protective GBP/USD put options to hedge against a downside break below 1.3150.

Technically, the Relative Strength Index hovering in the lower 40s indicates that bearish momentum is present but currently stalling. Therefore, we advise against chasing breakouts until there is a confirmed daily close outside the immediate 1.3250–1.3350 band. Instead, executing range-reversal strategies using automated limit orders near these key thresholds offers the best risk-reward ratio in the coming weeks.
