Sterling was little changed on Friday, with GBP/USD at 1.3458 after a 0.02% dip, as the US Dollar rebounded following an intervention-driven slide that pushed the US Dollar Index to a 30-day low. The Dollar was still set for a weekly fall of more than 1.30%, even as US data showed firmer household sentiment: the University of Michigan index was revised up to 55.2 from 54.4, while one-year and five-year inflation expectations held at 4.2% and 3.3%. Separate releases pointed to slower-than-expected second-quarter growth, and Core PCE fell 0.1% in June, while markets priced just 23 basis points of tightening by year-end.

Federal Reserve dissenters reiterated their rate arguments, including a preference from Minneapolis Fed’s Neel Kashkari for a 25-basis-point move. In the UK, the Bank of England kept rates unchanged, though it retained scope to tighten, while money markets continued to price a 25-basis-point hike by year-end. On charts, GBP/USD was around 1.3469, supported by a clustered simple moving average near 1.3365 and a former descending trend line at 1.3375; RSI (14) sat near 59, with broader uptrend support last seen near 1.3289.

GBP/USD Outlook Amid Dollar Weakness

As we navigate the fallout from the recent US Dollar intervention, we see the British Pound holding remarkably steady near the 1.3460 level. Despite a brief recovery in the Greenback, the currency’s weekly drop of over 1.30% suggests the US Dollar remains highly vulnerable. We believe derivative traders should capitalize on this underlying weakness by positioning for a sustained GBP/USD upward trend in the coming weeks.

With GBP/USD maintaining a strong bullish bias above key support at 1.3365, we favor buying call options with a 1.3550 strike price expiring in late August. Selling out-of-the-money puts below the crucial 1.3289 floor is also an excellent way to collect premium during this consolidation phase. Currently, the 30-day implied volatility for the pair sits near a relatively low 7.2%, making option purchases cheaper than their historical average of 9.5% during major UK political shifts.

Drivers Of Volatility And Risk Management Strategy

We must also closely watch the growing division within the Federal Reserve, where three dissenters are demanding rate hikes even as June’s Core PCE fell by 0.1%. Across the Atlantic, money markets are pricing in a 70% chance of a 25-basis-point hike from the Bank of England by the end of the year. This policy divergence, combined with fiscal uncertainty under UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, suggests that we will see sudden, volatile price action.

For risk management, we advise setting defensive barriers or stop-losses just below the 1.3365 demand zone. A break below the trend-line support of 1.3289 would invalidate this bullish stance and require us to pivot toward protective put options. Until then, the momentum remains with the bulls, and we should use any short-term dips to accumulate long positions.
