Sterling Steady Above 1.3300 as UK Data and Autumn Budget Loom, US Yields Support Dollar

Sterling started the week steady against the US Dollar, with GBP/USD holding above 1.3300 and up 0.07% as markets await UK labour and inflation releases. Elevated energy prices tied to the US-Iran conflict remain in focus, while the UK calendar also includes a speech from the Bank of England Governor and Retail Sales. UK GDP growth in August added support, and attention is turning to next week’s Autumn Budget, which could affect the Pound depending on how fiscal aims are balanced with growth plans.

In the US, firmer-than-expected consumer and producer inflation has left rate expectations tilted towards a December move, with traders pricing a 25 basis-point hike at 91%. The US Dollar Index rose 0.13% to 101.91, while the US 10-year Treasury yield increased by 4.6 bps to 5.127%. Global yields also moved higher as French unrest pushed up French debt yields, and with Federal Reserve speakers in blackout ahead of the October 27-28 meeting, upcoming housing data, the ADP Employment Change 4-week average, jobless claims and S&P Global Flash PMIs are set to steer near-term Dollar direction.

Trading Strategies and Technical Levels for GBP/USD

We recommend derivative traders prepare for heightened volatility in the British Pound as critical UK inflation data and fiscal announcements approach this month. With US 10-year Treasury yields hovering above 5.12% and markets pricing in a 91% chance of a Fed rate hike in December, elevated yields continue to backstop the Greenback. Traders should consider using short-term option straddles to capitalize on sharp price swings ahead of the Bank of England’s upcoming commentary and UK retail sales figures.

Looking at the charts, we suggest closely monitoring the key technical pivot at 1.3275 on GBP/USD. A breakdown below this support level could trigger accelerated selling toward lower cycle boundaries, making downside put options an attractive hedging tool. Historically, unexpected fiscal policy shifts—such as the massive market sell-off during the 2022 UK budget crisis that pushed Cable to a record low of 1.0327—highlight how sensitive the currency remains to fiscal risks.

For upside exposure, we advise caution unless the pair manages a daily close above the heavy resistance cluster near 1.3414. Given that historical one-week implied volatility for GBP/USD frequently surges ahead of major UK budget presentations, buying volatility via call options only makes sense if price breaks decisively past the 1.3408 trendline. Until then, shorting futures or buying puts near resistance offers a favorable risk-to-reward ratio.

Risk Management Considerations Amid Global Bond Market Moves

We also urge traders to manage risk carefully around global bond market moves, particularly as French debt yields rise and energy supply concerns linger. Historically, wider interest rate differentials favoring the US Dollar have kept upside rallies in check for Sterling. Position sizing should remain disciplined, keeping leverage modest to withstand unexpected headlines out of both London and Washington.
