Sterling traded close to 1.3300 in New York morning dealing, little changed on the day. Price action was subdued, with the session spanning barely 30 pips.

The move held above roughly 1.3250 at the low and topped out fractionally above 1.3300. It marked the narrowest daily range in weeks, coming a little over a day ahead of the Federal Reserve decision and two days before the Bank of England decision, which is due alongside a new Monetary Policy Report.

Pre-Decision Volatility Compression

We are seeing the calm before the storm as the Pound hugs the 1.3300 level in an incredibly tight 30-pip range. With the Federal Reserve announcing its policy decision today and the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Report just around the corner, this compressed volatility is a classic setup. We believe derivative traders should prepare for an imminent breakout from this unusually narrow band.

Trading Strategies Amid Major Central Bank Risks

Historically, when GBP/USD realized volatility drops to these levels ahead of dual central bank decisions, short-term options tend to underprice the actual move. In previous high-stakes weeks, similar tight pre-decision ranges have broken out to trigger average moves of 1.2% to 1.5% in the spot rate within three days. We suggest looking at long straddle strategies to profit from this volatility underpricing, regardless of which way the market breaks.

The stakes are high as the market weighs the Fed’s current stance against the Bank of England’s struggle with sticky UK services inflation, which remains stubborn. If the BoE maintains a hawkish tone to combat these domestic price pressures, we could see a rapid push past the 1.3350 resistance level. We advise utilizing out-of-the-money call options to capture this potential upside while limiting downside risk.
