Sterling regained ground against the US Dollar on Tuesday, with GBP/USD up 0.14% at 1.3451 after rebounding from 1.3419, as softer US data and lower oil prices weighed on the Greenback. June JOLTS openings eased to 7.359 million from 7.537 million, under the 7.4 million forecast, while the US trade deficit narrowed to $-73.3 billion from $-77.6 billion, slightly wider than the $-73 billion estimate. West Texas Intermediate fell 4% to $76.73 per barrel on reports of possible progress on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and the Dollar Index slipped 0.04% to 99.94. Pricing for the Federal Reserve shifted, with expectations seen at about 20 basis points of tightening by year-end, four fewer than the prior day, according to Prime Terminal data.

In the UK, the calendar was empty, leaving attention on fiscal policy under Prime Minister Andy Burnham, after Chancellor John Healey asked ministers to reduce budgets. On charts, GBP/USD held above support around 1.3445 and a simple moving average cluster near 1.3364, with a further level at 1.3308; RSI (14) stood at 56.5. Resistance was cited at 1.3526 and 1.3548, while the US diary includes jobless claims on Thursday and Nonfarm Payrolls on Friday.

GBP/USD Outlook and Derivative Strategies

We believe derivative traders should prepare for a bullish breakout in GBP/USD toward the 1.3526 resistance level in the coming weeks. With the US 10-year Treasury yield slipping toward 3.90% recently due to cooling labor demand, downward pressure on the greenback is mounting. We recommend buying short-term call options with a strike price of 1.3500 to capitalize on this upward momentum.

To manage risk, we must watch the critical support level at 1.3364, which aligns with the triple simple moving average. Derivative traders can structure bull call spreads to limit premium costs while protecting against any sudden hawkish shifts from the Federal Reserve. Historically, August trading volume is lower, meaning sudden liquidity drops can trigger sharp price swings, making defined-risk option strategies highly preferable.

Multi-Asset Positioning and Volatility Ahead

The 4% drop in WTI crude to $76.73 highlights a growing positive correlation between weaker oil prices and a softer US Dollar Index, which currently sits just below 100. We suggest looking at multi-asset options, perhaps pairing long GBP/USD positions with short crude oil futures to hedge against broader geopolitical changes in the Middle East. This dual approach helps insulate our portfolios if diplomatic talks regarding the Strait of Hormuz hit unexpected hurdles.

With US Nonfarm Payrolls releasing this Friday, we expect implied volatility in currency options to rise from its current quiet levels. Traders should consider buying straddles ahead of the announcement to profit from sharp swings in either direction. Once the payroll data is digested, we can transition back to trend-following strategies, keeping our eyes on the UK’s evolving fiscal policy under the new administration.
